Latest ChatGPT Update: October 2026

OpenAI introduced GPT-6 with Intelligent UI in ChatGPT on October 7, 2026. The update brings interactive, visually rich responses to ChatGPT, allowing it to adapt the way it presents information to the user’s request instead of relying exclusively on text.

The rollout began globally with Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans, followed by Free and Go plans starting October 8. Availability may vary depending on the plan, workspace settings, and selected model.

1. GPT-6 Introduces Intelligent UI

Intelligent UI allows ChatGPT to combine text, visuals, and interactive components within a single response. Depending on the task, an answer may include diagrams, charts, buttons, forms, or interactive tools that users can explore directly in the conversation.

For example, users can ask ChatGPT to:

  • Create a calculator for exploring savings or financial scenarios.
  • Explain a complex concept through an interactive diagram.
  • Compare products, plans, or options side by side.
  • Build a bill-splitting tool for a group.
  • Generate a simple game or interactive learning experience.

ChatGPT chooses the response format based on the request. When a straightforward text answer is sufficient, it can still respond with plain text.

2. ChatGPT Can Begin Answering While It Continues to Think

GPT-6 also introduces a more progressive response experience. Rather than waiting until all reasoning or tool use is complete, ChatGPT can begin presenting useful information and then add further findings as it continues working.

According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Instant begins answering web-search questions 44% sooner on average than GPT-5.6 Instant. This figure comes from OpenAI’s internal evaluation and should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every response will be faster by the same amount.

The goal is to make complex answers feel more responsive while allowing the model to continue gathering information and developing its response.

3. Which ChatGPT Plans Support GPT-6?

OpenAI’s October announcement introduced GPT-6 across ChatGPT plans, with different models assigned to different subscriptions.

  • Free and Go: GPT-6 Luna.
  • Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise: GPT-6 Sol.
  • Pro reasoning: GPT-6 Astra continues to power the Pro reasoning option, which does not support Intelligent UI in this release.

The rollout applies to the Chat experience. The models powering ChatGPT Work and Codex are separate and were not changed by this particular release.

Users should check their model picker and workspace settings to confirm which options are available to their accounts.

Other Recent ChatGPT Updates

GPT-6 is the headline release, but several other October updates introduce practical features for working with recordings, shopping, documents, and personal finances.

October 6, 2026: Audio Uploads in ChatGPT

ChatGPT now supports uploading audio files for transcription, summarization, and follow-up questions about recorded content.

Users can attach a supported recording and ask ChatGPT to turn it into meeting notes, summarize an interview, extract important points from a lecture, or draft a follow-up email.

Audio uploads are available with paid ChatGPT subscriptions and supported workspaces. They are not currently available on the Free plan, and availability can vary by region, workspace settings, client version, and selected model.

Transcripts may contain errors, and accuracy can vary across languages, so important details should be checked against the original recording.

October 2, 2026: Finances Expands to Free and Go

OpenAI began rolling out its Finances experience to Free and Go users in the United States.

The feature allows eligible users to connect financial accounts and ask questions about spending, savings, and investments using information from their connected accounts.

The expansion is limited by geography and availability. At the time of the announcement, the rollout covered eligible users in the United States on web, iOS, and Android.

October 1, 2026: Virtual Try-On and Document Scanning

OpenAI introduced two practical additions to ChatGPT.

Virtual try-on for shopping

Users can select a Try on option on supported clothing and accessory listings, then use a selfie or uploaded photo to preview how an item might look on them. ChatGPT also allows users to save products to Favorites or organize them into folders in their Library.

The experience is available on supported mobile and web interfaces.

Scan notes and documents with ChatGPT

On iOS, users can capture multiple pages through the ChatGPT camera’s scanning feature. ChatGPT combines the captured pages into a single PDF that can be uploaded to a conversation.

These additions extend ChatGPT beyond question answering into shopping assistance and document workflows.

Previous Major ChatGPT Updates

September 29, 2026: GPT-6.1 Sol, Codex Cloud, and More Ways to Work

OpenAI announced several updates to its professional work and coding experiences.

GPT-6.1 Sol in ChatGPT Work and Codex

GPT-6.1 Sol improves on GPT-6 Sol in agentic coding, computer use, and professional work. The rollout began with Pro users and was planned to expand to additional eligible plans and workspaces.

Codex Cloud

Codex Cloud allows coding tasks to run in isolated cloud environments with project repositories, tools, and dependencies. Tasks can continue running even when a user’s computer is asleep.

Dots: Ongoing AI Agents

OpenAI also introduced dots, agents designed to make progress toward an assigned goal between conversations. Users can connect the apps an agent needs, define what it can do, and review the results it brings back.

Dots were introduced with limited availability for eligible users and supported markets. Availability restrictions apply, so the feature should not be assumed to be accessible to every ChatGPT subscriber.

September 23, 2026: Voice Conversations With Connected Apps

OpenAI expanded support for connected apps and plugins during Voice conversations.

Eligible users can use supported connected apps while speaking with ChatGPT and follow the written responses in the chat. Voice is also available in ChatGPT Work on supported web and mobile experiences, where users can request documents, presentations, spreadsheets, and other work.

Access depends on the user’s plan, available integrations, permissions, and usage limits.

September 22, 2026: Interactive Flashcards

ChatGPT introduced interactive flashcards to support learning and revision.

Users can ask ChatGPT to create flashcards about a topic or upload notes and request a study set. Cards can be flipped to reveal answers, and users can mark whether they know a concept or want to practice it again.

Flashcards are saved in the user’s Library and were announced as available on mobile and web across ChatGPT plans.

This update makes ChatGPT more useful for students, language learners, and anyone reviewing information for an exam or professional qualification.

September 8, 2026: ChatGPT Images 2.5

OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Images 2.5 with improvements to image detail, editing precision, and generation speed.

The update also added new creative workflows:

  • Image templates: Start from a template and customize the result.
  • Sketch-to-image: On supported mobile experiences, draw a rough idea and describe the image you want ChatGPT to create.
  • Image editing and comments: Open generated images on mobile to make edits or provide comments about desired changes.
  • Prompt sharing: Share the prompt used to create an image so other people can try their own versions.

Some features have different availability across Chat, Work, mobile, and web experiences.
